History of Dollars and Sense Investment Club

The Dollars and Sense Investment Club is comprised of fifteen women and has been in business for fifteen years. Our portfolio is valued at $348,000 with each member putting up $100 per quarter or $400 per year. About half of our membership are of the original group. Our members are self taught, using NAIC resources. Many members have attended regional and national workshops and National Congress Meetings. Everyone in the club follows at least one stock and reports on it monthly. We have almost 100% participation.

A key to a successful club over the long term is having the NAIC Club Accounting for the computer. None of us are accountants and we have been able to manage our money and accounting very well with this program.

In the beginning, none of our members had any experience with stock investing on our own. Our husbands had done a little- usually doing what was recommended by a broker. It didn't take long for us to learn that there is a lot more to be gained when we know why we buy a stock, therefore we are in a better position to know when to sell. It has taken a long time for us to all understand the philosophy of investing for the long term and to invest based on the fundamentals of growth of sales and earnings and profit margins.

We are a member of NAIC and affiliated with the Southwest LA Council (Serving Southwestern Louisiana - Lafayette, Lake Charles, DeRidder, and Alexandria areas). The regional council functions to provide educational support for local investment clubs and provide educational workshops for others interested in forming clubs.
