The Beauregard Parish Airport, an ex-Army Air Base, was transferred to
Beauregard Parish at the end of WWII on Dec. 23, 1948 and remains an
active public airport. By the terms of transfer, the property must remain
an airport and all revenues generated by the property must be used to
benefit the airport. The total property exceeds 4,200 acres. This includes
an airfield, acreage for aeronautical leases, commercial/industrial
leases, recreational leases, and large areas devoted to forestry &
agriculture. All non-aeronautical property was transferred as part of the
original grant to provide a revenue source for operation, maintenance, and
improvement/development of the airport. As a result, the airport is
self-supporting and receives no local taxes.
The Airport is owned by Beauregard Parish and is a component of the
Beauregard Parish Police Jury. The Police Jury has created an Airport
District headed by a seven member Board of Commissioners. The board
employs an Airport Manager and 3 full-time employees. Part time employees
are hired based on seasonal needs.
The present primary runway (RW 18/36) is oriented in a North-South
direction with a length of 5,495 feet. This runway is lighted with Medium
Intensity Runway Lights which can be controlled from an aircraft by radio.
Both Localizer and Non-Directional Beacon instrument approaches are
aligned with RW 36 allowing instrument approaches to a ceiling of 300 feet
and visiblity of one mile. After 50 years, RW 14/32 was reopened in 1992
as an alternate runway with a lenght of 4,295 feet. The airport has also
added ODALS and an AWOS-3 unit. The AWOS fequency is 118.225. The AWOS
phone number is (337)-463-8278.
A concrete airplane parking ramp, 1600' by 400' is adjacent to the main
hangar and has tie downs for 200 aircraft. This makes the airport very
attractive during hurricane season when many aircraft use this as an
evacuation location.
The main hangar contains 33,000 square feet and includes 8,000 square feet
devoted to administration/terminal functions.
In 1994 the hangar was completely re-roofed with airport funds. A six-unit
T-hangar was constructed in 1992. In 1993 an updated and improved aircraft
wash rack was built conforming to environmental regulations. In 1998 a new
Corporate Aircraft hangar was completed with 7200 square feet of space.
All of the hangars are full. And in 1998, double-wall, above ground,
10,000 gallon fuel tanks were installed to meet EPA/DEQ regulations. All
of these improvements were paid for with airport funds generated by the
airport.
The airport has available, for fueling, both JET-A and AVGAS. Essentially
the airport can accommodate most corporate jets, turbine, and piston
aircraft up to 60,000 lbs. single wheel, as well as other general aviation
aircraft.
